DAMAGE
CONTROL
HARTMAN ENGINEERING has provided the initial
response to situations of heavy damage to buildings and
towers. Depending upon the situation, the firm may design the
remedial measures and provide inspection during the repair
work. Four of the most significant projects are described
below:
- The firm provided an initial emergency response to Jones
Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, New York, when the
foundation soils were being eroded by flooding of the
Genesee River. Under the direction of Dr. Hartman
contractors were able to stop one wing of the building from
moving. He also determined when another wing had to be
evacuated before it collapsed into the river.
- At Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, the firm
provided an emergency response at the request of the
university when construction problems seriously endangered
an eight story reinforced concrete building under
construction on the campus. An initial safety evaluation was
performed and monitoring systems were established and
maintained by HARTMAN ENGINEERING.
- The firm was retained to assist in the rehabilitation of
a newly constructed condominium building in San Juan, Puerto
Rico. Two of the three underground parking levels were
constructed below sea level. The lower slabs were being
lifted by the water pressure at that depth. HARTMAN
ENGINEERING diagnosed the problem, designed the repair
system, and provided construction monitoring during
implementation of the repairs.
- In Oswego, New York, a 200 foot long section of loading
dock was heavily damaged. During controlled explosive
demolition of a grain elevator it fell on the dock and into
the harbor. HARTMAN ENGINEERING was retained by the
liability insurance carrier initially to supervise the
removal of debris form the harbor and inspect the dock to
determine the extent of damage. The firm was then asked to
design the repairs and supervise the reconstruction.
